The Black Knight is an extremely impressive design, perhaps too much
so. It is one of only two Inner Sphere design to mount omni
weapons slots. The mech that shares the honor - the 90 ton Sunder
- has more claim to the right than the Black Knight. According to
BattleTech lore, the Sunder was developed as an Inner Sphere
OmniMech, based on Clan design. The Black Knight, however, is an
old Star League design, one of the older mechs around, and not one
that would logically be mounting the newer omni pod technology.
Apparently being a namesake has its privileges.
The mech stands out in numerous
categories, especially weapons slots and component options. 17
weapons slots are quite a lot, and the Black Knight's are well
arrayed, with the bias towards beam weapons offset by the six omni
slots. It's also the only mech in the game to have options for all
5 components (there are technically six, with separate
anti-missile system types for IS and Clan mechs). Along with the
Sunder, it can mount an otherwise unequalled four ERPPCs.
