Largest of the mechs included with Black Knight, the Sunder is a
strong design able to hold its own in any slugfest. The only Inner
Sphere assault mech to sport omni slots, the Sunder is able to
mount any weapon in the game, though it is best suited for a beam
configuration with complementary missile weapons, or a single
large ballistic weapon.
Perhaps the Sunder's most
significant statistic, and one that is easy to overlook, is its
ability to mount a large amount of equipment at relatively high
speeds. It can crank its engine
to 89.75 KPH, load up with a full 17.5 tons of ferro-fibrous
armor, and still have 40 tons available to allocate to weapons and
equipment. No other assault mech can get close to that. The
runners-up are the Awesome, which can carry 25.9 tons at 90 KPH,
and the Atlas which can carry 37.3 tons at 75 KPH (though carrying
19.7 tons of armor). This makes the Sunder extremely well suited
to base assault missions; the frequent need to charge the base,
re-spawn, and charge again simply cries out for a big mech that
can move quickly yet still take a punch and deliver devastating
barrages. The ability to mount ECM and AMS only adds to this
ability.
Even scaled back to lower speeds
the Sunder is a dominant mech. Set at its minimum speed of 55.01
KPH, it can carry 72.5 tons of weapons, armor, and equipment. The
deadliest Inner Sphere assault mech from the original MechWarrior
4 release, the Atlas, can carry 69 tons at its closest equivalent
speed, 57.02 KPH. The Sunder doesn't outmode the Atlas, but it is
pound for pound a more impressive design, and overall it is
statistically the best IS assault mech.
