Smallest of the medium mechs, the Chimera initially appears to be outmoded by the
next-biggest mech, the Hellspawn. The two mechs are virtually equal in speed and
maneuverability, but the Chimera can carry less armor, has less component options, and has
substantially fewer weapons slots available to it. The
Chimera's strength becomes visible upon examination of the placement of its weapons
slots. It has only three each of beam, ballistic, and missile slots, but each set of
three is grouped together. Since the largest weapons in the game require three slots, this
makes the Chimera capable of carrying any weapon. Surprisingly, no other Inner
Sphere chassis carries this distinction.
Picking one powerful weapon (Gauss Rifle, ER PPC, LBX-AC20,
Thunderbolt) and throwing in a few supporting weapons is a good strategy with the
Chimera. The ER PPC is a good choice for this relatively light mech, as it leaves
enough tonnage left over for a good supporting weapon, or additional armor, speed, or
components. It's also nice to use the mech's speed and run in close to unleash an LBX-AC20
or Thunderbolt shot.
