Traps: DC Target Table and Strategy - Are traps even useable? Under the right circumstances. Check out our table and comments on the subject.

At this risk of mentioning spoilers, there are specific parts in the plot of the module, released with Neverwinter Nights, that have enemies who start out talking all  friendly-like then ends up a fight. If unprepared the first time and suffer defeat, consider setting up for the second encounter. Set some traps up. Friendly (Player Characters) PCs can stand in them and not be hurt. Only a hostile opponent can set them off (if it is area effect don't be standing too close when they do).  Run when the fight starts and lead them into several traps of hurt and maiming.

Though it didn't seem that way when NWN was released, it does seem to give you XP credit for enemies being killed by PC traps. After the many game updates, there is no easy way to confirm a change has occurred, but it seems to work now and that is what counts. The only times of denied XP which seem present currently involve enemies setting off their own traps or die from losing too many hit points when their Endurance boost fades.

HappyGamers tested traps in self made modules using some of the more powerful dragons as opponents and the nicer traps can do some considerable damage to some nasty beasts. It is nice to soften up big nasty before standing toe to toe with them. If a PC has been given a couple levels in Set Traps but have not used it, consider consulting the chart below to see what level of traps he or she can set.

To see what a character's target DC roll is, purchase any trap and try to set it. Note what non combat roll for setting traps is (PC received automatic maximum roll if not in combat, which is the safest moment to set traps). Take a gander at the chart below, but don't be too discouraged about what traps are out of reach. Remember, there is a lot of thief related equipment in the game that can enhance  "set traps" ability and move that target roll up in value. Also consider quaffing a Cat's Grace potion or temporarily wearing some Dex boosters to up the score to set nicer traps. If wielding a shield or wearing heavier than standard leather armor, make sure to remove them before setting traps. Both take Set Traps DC target down quite a bit and could limit Dex bonuses.
