  Happy Gamers' Single Player Review

by Psyclone Jack

This installment is sort of a single player game review with my thoughts on what techniques work best for some of the enemies.  There may be a few spoilers so if you haven’t played very far you may want to skip this.  By the same token, if you are simply interested in what some of the weapons, enemies and situations you might encounter in the game then by all means read on!

Preliminaries
If you have read the other reviews then you’ve no doubt heard about the cut scenes.  Cheesy though they are, they personally didn’t affect me in a negative enough fashion to detract from the game.  The play control in RtCW is solid and, as most FPS games on the PC, very configurable.  The character animations and graphics are great.   My only complaint with the graphics is that sometimes when you kill an enemy, they occasionally fall halfway through a wall or door.  What’s up with that?  But otherwise, if I had a scoring system I’d give the single player mode something like an 8 out of 10.  Some hardcore Wolfenstein fans have complained about the German accented English speaking German soldiers.   Yeah, it was neat way back when they would scream single German words at you in the original Wolf3D but at least now we know what the Nazis are saying.  The game has a few “how do I get this door open?”  brainteasers to exercise your puzzle solving abilities.

In the Beginning . . .
We find Mr. Blazkowicz having been captured and now trying to escape Castle Wolfenstein.  The plot consists of stopping the Nazis plans for resurrecting a long dead, nearly unstoppable medieval warrior with many other related missions to do along the way.  Sound far-fetched?  Well, yeah.  It does make for an exciting single player experience though.   You essentially start off with the knife and 9mm Luger.  This means some stealth is involved along with good marksmanship.  Shortly there after, the MP 40 is added to the arsenal.  So you’re not without a good weapon for long.  I’ve noticed that once you have the Mauser with the sniper scope you can snipe your way through a good portion of the game.  It’s as if the majority of the enemy soldiers in the game have impaired sight, unable to see you from a distance.  The stealth missions are a pain sometimes but provide a nice break from the "destroy this" or "survive hordes of enemies" missions.  I must admit the crypt levels did bring back that old feeling of fear and tension that I haven’t felt since Doom.  I also found out that grenades work well against the Shield Zombies, as long as they are at a distance and not in droves.   Here are a few techniques I’ve used to defeat certain enemies in RtCW:

Shield Zombies

Either use grenades from a distance or get them to stand up from behind their shields by walking right up to them then quickly backing off while blasting away with a machine gunned weapon of choice
Zombie Boss at the Church

Once the boss breaks through the fence run back to the broken wall.  Side-step out from the wall and toss out one grenade and then run back through the wall.  Wait to hear the explosion and then repeat.  Do this two more times and then start using the MP 40 or Thompson to fire a few rounds at the Boss when stepping out from the wall and then run back through the wall.  Repeat until he’s defeated.
Uber Soldat Boss at the Lab

I started off by firing a rocket at him from the upper platform and then quickly ran and jumped down the stairs.  I then did a lot of strafing around the pillars while in close proximity to the boss using whatever I had at my disposal:  Venom, MP40, Thompson, and eventually Tesla.
Two Uber Soldats

Unfettered persistence using everything in your arsenal.  First one is somewhat easy but that second Uber Soldat, OUCH
Dark Knight (A.K.A. Rob Zombie)

He was a bit of a disappointment, much easier to defeat than I thought he’d be.  Just stay on the stones in the middle of the map and his flying dark minions won’t even come out to play.  Take out the priestess first, she’s too annoying to leave be.  Then open up a can of whoop @$$ on the Rob Zombie look-a-like by strafing and blasting, only stopping to   pick up more ammo and health.  Screaming “Dragula” lyrics at the top of your lungs may help with your frag technique in this level.  It did for me.  The shield zombies are fairly easy to avoid, so don’t waste you bullets on them unless they attempt to surround you.  If you keep moving they shouldn’t cause any problems.

If anyone has any other methods, feel free to submit them to me, and I’ll see what I can do to get them on this site.
